He 1st Latin American Course in Pharmacoepidemiology It is an international training program designed to strengthen methodological capacities in Drug Utilization Studies (DUS), pharmacoepidemiology, and real-world evidence generation in Latin America. The initiative is organized in collaboration with the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology (ISPE), the Peruvian Pharmaceutical Chemistry Association, and the San Juan Bautista Private University (Peru).
The program aims to address current gaps in pharmacoepidemiology training in Latin America by combining lectures, mentoring activities, research development workshops, and collaborative learning in small groups. The course will prioritize the practical applications of observational research methods, real-world data analysis, intervention development, and evidence-informed decision-making.
The course will adopt a mentorship-based educational model, inspired by international experiences such as the EuroDURG Summer Schools (https://www.pharmacoepi.org/eurodurg/) and ISPE's educational activities. Participants will be selected through a structured, two-stage process that emphasizes academic motivation, early career development, and regional diversity.
The initiative also seeks to strengthen regional collaboration networks and promote the sustainable development of capacities in pharmacoepidemiology and drug use research throughout Latin America.
EDUCATIONAL APPROACH
This course aims to develop methodological and conceptual skills in research on EUM, pharmacoepidemiology and the generation of real-world evidence to improve the rational, safe and equitable use of medicines in Latin America, with an emphasis on the development of interventions, evaluation methods and applied analytical approaches.
The course will consist of:
- Interactive masterclasses focusing on the methodological foundations of EUM and pharmacoepidemiology, including real-world evidence generation, intervention development, applied analytical approaches, and applications in pharmacoeconomics and health technology assessment (HTA).
- Practical workshops that combine brief introductions with small group activities.
- Small group project development sessions, culminating in the presentation of collaborative research proposals on the last day of the course.
- Parallel sessions according to the level of the participants (introductory and advanced).
- Scientific and networking activities aimed at strengthening regional collaboration.
METHODOLOGY AND STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Strengthening the foundations of Pharmacoepidemiology and EUM: indicators, classification systems, units of measurement, prescription patterns and results.
- Acquire skills in observational study designs: cohorts, case-control studies, self-controlled studies, interrupted time series, and comparative drug utilization research.
- Develop introductory skills in Pharmacoeconomics and HTA for the interpretation and application of real-world evidence in health decision-making.
- Learn statistical approaches for assessing adherence, persistence, prescribing cascades, deprescribing, and time series analysis.
- Explore qualitative and mixed methods to understand the determinants of medication use.
- Understanding data sources for the EUM in Latin America and key aspects of data quality, interoperability, and digital health.
- Develop and refine an individual EUM project during the week, supported by structured daily mentoring sessions in small groups.
- Understanding how to develop real-world studies that can inform public policy or clinical practice.
Participants who successfully complete the course requirements will receive an official certificate of participation issued jointly by:
- International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology (ISPE).
- Pharmaceutical Chemical College of Peru.
- San Juan Bautista Private University.
Certification requirements may include:
- Minimum attendance of 80% of academic activities.
- Participation in mentoring sessions and workshops.
- Delivery and presentation of the project in development or the improved proposal prepared during the course.
CERTIFICATION
SCHOLARSHIPS
The Course will promote equitable participation through a selective scholarship program.
The scholarship policy will emphasize prioritizing students with limited incomes, restricting the allocation of scholarships to health professionals with active employment, unless otherwise provided, and seeking balanced representation in professional and geographical terms.
Scholarship eligibility
Priority will be given to:
- Master's students.
- PhD students.
- Professionals in the early stages of their careers.
*The scholarship selection process will be handled exclusively by ISPE.
Participants will be assigned to small mentoring groups coordinated by faculty members.
Mentoring activities will include:
- Refinement or development of research protocols.
- Project feedback sessions.
- Methodological discussions.
- Practical problem-solving activities in EUM research.
- Final project presentations.
The mentoring structure aims to maximize interaction between participants and international faculty, while promoting collaborative learning environments.
